Why a continuity log at all?

Under ASME Section IX, QW-322.1, a welder’s performance qualification for a process expires when the welder hasn’t used that process for six months or more. Welding with the process — on production work, under your organization’s supervision — keeps all of that welder’s qualifications for the process alive. ISO 9606-1 has a parallel requirement: a signed confirmation every six months, plus periodic revalidation.

Auditors (AI shops, customers, ISO registrars) routinely ask for the continuity record. Most small shops keep it in an Excel sheet that one person updates from memory. When that person is on vacation in month five, the spreadsheet quietly goes stale — and the shop finds out at the audit, or worse, after the welds are in service.
