Qualifying a welder is expensive; keeping the qualification alive is nearly free — but only if someone is actually watching the calendar. This page explains what “welder continuity” means under the two rule sets small fabrication shops meet most often: ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code Section IX (QW-322) and ISO 9606-1, what resets the clock, what auditors expect to see, and what a lapse actually costs.
The ASME IX six-month rule (QW-322.1)
ASME Section IX places no fixed expiry date on a welder performance qualification (WPQ). Instead, QW-322.1 ties validity to use: when a welder or welding operator has not welded with a process for six months or more, their qualifications for that process expire.
Three details matter in practice:
- Continuity is per process, not per WPQ. Welding with a process — production welding or test welding, on any material, under any WPS — maintains all of the welder’s qualifications for that process. It works the other way too: running GTAW daily does nothing for a welder’s SMAW continuity. Each welder–process pair carries its own rolling six-month clock.
- It must happen under the organization’s control. The welding that maintains continuity is welding performed under the supervision and control of the qualifying organization (or a participating organization, per QG-106). Hobby welding in a home garage is not evidence you can put in front of an auditor.
- It must be documented. The code requires continuity to be confirmed by the organization; in audit terms, a weld nobody recorded never happened. This is the entire reason continuity logs exist.
What happens when continuity lapses
An expired qualification does not mean starting from scratch. Under QW-322.1(b), a welder whose qualification expired through inactivity can renew it by welding a single test coupon with that process — any thickness, any position, any material — and passing the required examination. One successful coupon restores all of the welder’s previous qualifications for that process.
The harsher path is QW-322.2, revocation for cause: if there is a specific reason to question a welder’s ability to make sound welds, the qualifications supporting that work are revoked, and requalification requires a test that reflects the planned production welding — not the any-coupon shortcut.
So a lapse is recoverable, but never free: it means a coupon, lab testing, paperwork, and a welder off production — and if the lapse is discovered after production welds were made, it means an audit finding and a disposition exercise on those welds.
ISO 9606-1: confirmation every six months, plus revalidation
Shops working to European or international specs meet the same idea in ISO 9606-1, structured in two layers:
- Six-month confirmation (clause 9.2). Every six months, the person responsible for welding activities (or the examiner/examining body) must confirm — with a signature — that the welder has been working within the original range of qualification. Miss a confirmation and the certificate becomes invalid.
- Revalidation of the certificate (clause 9.3), by one of three routes chosen up front on the certificate:
- Retest every 3 years (9.3 a);
- Extension every 2 years based on two production welds from the last six months of the validity period, tested by RT, UT, or destructive testing (9.3 b);
- Indefinite validity while the welder stays with the same manufacturer, the manufacturer’s quality system is verified to ISO 3834, and acceptable weld quality is documented (9.3 c).
Practical upshot: under ISO you track two kinds of dates per welder (six-month confirmations and the certificate’s revalidation deadline); under ASME you track one rolling date per welder per process. Either way, the tracking artifact auditors ask for looks the same: a continuity log.
What auditors actually ask for
Whether it’s an Authorized Inspector, a customer’s source inspector, or an ISO registrar, the requests are predictable:
- The continuity log itself — per welder, per process, with last-weld dates inside the window;
- Traceable evidence behind sampled entries: job numbers, weld maps, travelers, or test records showing the welder really used the process on that date;
- The WPQs (Form QW-484 or the ISO certificate) matching the names and processes on the log;
- Proof that someone reviews upcoming expirations rather than discovering them — a dated review signature, or a system that flags them.
The classic small-shop finding is not a missing log — it’s a log that exists but went stale: a welder at month eight on SMAW, buried in an unsorted spreadsheet.
What a lapse costs
Requalification pricing varies by region and lab, but published figures give a realistic range: accredited labs list bend tests around $45–$150 per specimen (e.g. SoCal Welding’s destructive-testing lab), test facilities discussing rates on the AWS forum cite roughly $200–$800 per welder per process for a qualification test all-in, and an all-position qualification (fee plus four bend coupons) was quoted at about $500. On top of the lab invoice, add coupon material and consumables, plus half a day to a day of the welder’s time off production.
