Welder continuity log template (Excel/CSV + printable)

If your shop qualifies welders to ASME Section IX (or ISO 9606-1), you must be able to show that every welder has used every qualified process within the last six months — otherwise the qualification has expired (QW-322.1, explained here). The continuity log is the document auditors ask for to prove it. Here is a template that contains everything a defensible log needs, plus a printable version for the weld-shop binder. (Wondering whether a spreadsheet is the right tool at all? See the honest Excel vs. software comparison.)

What a compliant continuity log must contain

There is no code-mandated form — ASME IX requires the record, not a specific layout. But a log that survives an audit needs these columns:

The usual failure mode: The sheet exists, but nobody sorts it by expiry date. A compliant-looking log with a lapse buried in row 40 still produces an audit finding. Whatever you use, sort by the expiry column — or use a tool that does it for you.

Opens directly in Excel or Google Sheets. Includes the columns above and two example rows you can overwrite. Add the =EDATE(<last weld cell>,6) formula to the expiry column after opening it.

For shops that keep the log on a clipboard: print this blank sheet and fill it in by hand.

Honestly? The spreadsheet is the weak link

A template fixes the format problem, not the tracking problem. The template still relies on someone re-sorting it, re-checking dates, and noticing that a welder is at month five. That is exactly the step that fails when the shop gets busy.

We built a free interactive welder continuity log that does the fragile part for you: it computes every expiry date, flags anything expiring within 30 days, sorts the soonest lapses to the top, logs today’s weld in one click, exports this same CSV, and prints an audit report. It runs entirely in your browser — no account, no upload.
